The company behind high street giant Zara has committed to using 100% sustainable fabrics
Inditex, the company behind fashion retailer Zara, as well as other well known brands such as Zara Home, Massimo Dutti and Pull&Bear has committed to use of sustainable fabrics for 100% of its products.
This comes as part of the company’s new sustainability goals which were announced this week.
Sustainable Components
Inditex brands will be using only sustainable viscose by 2023 and all fabrics in its lines will be sustainable by 2025.
Renewable Energy Goals
The corporate giant also committed to using at least 80% renewable energy sources for its headquarters, factories and stores by 2025.
Zero Waste Goals
The company will ensure that landfill waste is not created by any of its facilities by the year 2025.
This is not the first push for sustainability made by the company. It has collected over 34,000 tonnes of used clothing after placing collection banks at over 800 of its stores.
These ambitious goals have been set internally by Inditex – who are ranked by Forbes as the 3rd biggest fashion retail company globally with annual sales last year of €26.1 billion – aim to lead the way for other high street retailers to take a more ethical approach.
Sustainability in high street fashion is an oxymoron.
Whilst this may seem like progress, and some changes of this sort are positive, much of this is just a PR stunt in greenwashing. it is important to remember that Zara is a major player in the fast fashion scene. Fast fashion is responsible for huge scale human and environmental ethical violations the world over. With Zara pushing a whopping 26 seasons in a year, there’s no sign of the retail giant scaling back on production or focusing on quality of life for workers in its factories.
If you sustainability is important to you, fast fashion is the first thing that should be avoided. There’s SO much more to this picture than using sustainable components. Whether you opt for minimalism or zero waste, or vegan, thrift and slow fashion options, your choices can start to really make a positive impact in the world.
